Personal Training for Adults Over 40 in Beaverton, OR: Getting Stronger in Your 40s and 50s

Blog
Private personal training studio in Beaverton with full strength and mobility equipment

I turned 50 this summer. A few weeks later I ran the anchor leg of the Hood to Coast relay, on a fused spine, with my daughter on the team.

Ten years ago I could not have imagined it. Years of construction left me with spinal damage, chronic pain and three surgeries. Somewhere in my 40s the approach that used to work stopped working, and for a long time I did not know what to do about it.

That is the person I built this practice for.

What Changes After 40, and What Does Not

Here is what a lot of people in their 40s and 50s tell me when they walk into my Beaverton studio for the first time.

They used to be able to just go do something. Play a pickup game, hike a steep trail, help a friend move, hop back into the gym after a break. Now the same things come with a price. A knee that talks back on stairs. A low back that tightens up after a long drive. Shoulders that do not like overhead work anymore. Recovery that takes days instead of hours.

So they do one of two things. They push harder, using the same workouts that worked at 25, and something gives. Or they back off, tell themselves they are just getting older, and slowly stop moving.

Both of those are the wrong answer. Your body has not stopped responding to training. It has stopped responding to that training. Strength, mobility and joint health respond to smart work at any age, and in your 40s and 50s that work pays off more than it ever has, because these are the years that set up the next twenty.

Why Most Gyms and Programs Miss Adults Over 40

Big box gyms are built for people who already move well. Boot camps are built to make you sweat, not to make you stronger. Apps assume every body is the same body.

None of them are built for the person who is not injured, exactly, but is not 25 anymore either. The person with a few old aches, a full calendar, and no interest in getting hurt just to prove a point.

That is the gap I work in. I am not a physical therapist and I am not a replacement for medical care. I am the coach you work with when you are cleared to train and you want to do it right.

What Training in Your 40s and 50s Looks Like at My Studio

At Fitness Training LLC, training for adults over 40 is not a watered down program. It is a smarter one. A typical program includes:

  • Full body strength work built around the big patterns, hinging, squatting, pressing, pulling and carrying, because those are the movements that keep you capable
  • Progressive loading that respects where your joints are today and builds from there, instead of jumping to where you think you should be
  • Mobility work for the hips, ankles, shoulders and thoracic spine woven into every session, not tacked on at the end
  • ATG Knees Over Toes principles for the knees, hips and ankles, so the joints that usually go first get stronger instead of just getting managed
  • Recovery built into the plan, so you can train consistently for years instead of hard for six weeks

Everything is one on one, in a private studio in Beaverton. No crowds, no noise, no one watching you learn.

What It Looks Like From the Other Side

From a Google review by Micah Watts:

“I’ve worked with trainers in the past that were all about lifting heavy and trying to break me. Caleb is not only empathetic, but compassionate and accommodating to my needs. He guided me through instant obstacles I faced as a VERY busy, stressed out 44 year old with 20+ years of bad habits. Now I ENJOY my workouts (never thought I’d say that!).”

Who This Is For

The adults over 40 who get the most out of training with me are usually:

  • Getting back to training after a long break and unsure how to start without getting hurt
  • Dealing with the first real aches, a cranky knee, a tight low back, a shoulder that has limits now
  • Busy with work and family and needing every minute of a small training window to count
  • Done with boot camps and drill sergeants and looking for a coach who actually sees them
  • Wanting to keep up with their kids, their sport or their hobbies for a long time
  • Cleared by their doctor or physical therapist and ready to build back stronger

You do not need to be injured to train here. You do not need to be in shape to start. You need to be willing to show up and do the work at the pace your body can actually handle.

The ATG Connection

Part of what makes my approach different is my background as an ATG Coach (Knees Over Toes).

The Knees Over Toes system rebuilds joint health through progressive loading, especially in the knees, hips and ankles. For people in their 40s and 50s, this matters. Those are the joints that usually decide whether you keep doing the things you love or start giving them up. Instead of avoiding the movements that bother you, we work toward making them feel safe again. Slowly, methodically, with patience.
